The City of Pittsburg commends the decision of U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro to fully exonerate fifty Black sailors wrongfully convicted of mutiny.

Following the Port Chicago Disaster, many soldiers refused to return to work due to unsafe conditions. The Navy identified 50 Black soldiers – who came to be known as the Port Chicago 50 – as leaders of the movement. They were found guilty of mutiny, served years in prison and endured hard labor. The events at Port Chicago were a catalyst for civil rights and social justice, led by then NAACP Chief Counsel Thurgood Marshall.
