In June, BART announced its “Fleet of the Future” train car would be built in the transit agency’s backyard of Pittsburg, California – a city that houses two stations, allowing prospective Bombardier employees to ride the cars they build to work.
Bombardier anticipates building 775 rail cars for BART. Currently, cars are constructed in upstate New York, more than 3,000 miles across the country, and shipped to the Bay Area. By reducing the distance these cars are trucked, Bombardier anticipates a great reduction in emissions resulting from shipping. Bombardier anticipates it will employ 50 people upon opening the Pittsburg plant.
